When Aidan Gallagher joined “The Umbrella Academy,” he was already a huge fan of the comic books of the same name.
But, he didn’t realize that comic co-creator Gerard Way had lead alternative rock band My Chemical Romance.
“It made like ultimate sense,” Gallagher, who plays Number Five, told Variety at the premiere of the show’s fourth and final season at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on Monday night. “When I got the show and made that connection, I’d just channel ‘The Black Parade’ everyday on my way to set, listening to sort of get the rage and chaotic nature of Five.”

The new season sees the Hargreeves family stripped of their powers and left to fend for themselves, as a mysterious association believes they’re in the wrong timeline because of the superhero clan.

Elliot Page said it was “odd” to say goodbye to the series after that final “cut” was called.
“I think it didn’t even necessarily hit until later,” Page recalled. “To say goodbye to the cast and crew we’ve worked with for years and years, it’s definitely hard. You really become very familial.”
He said he has a lot of gratitude to have been able to be on the show for four seasons as Victor Hargreeves, and hopes audiences “have a blast” and enjoy the final season: “I’m just hoping it gives the emotions, and the humor and the weirdness that people have come to expect.”
Emmy Raver-Lampman, who plays Alison Hargreeves, said it hasn’t hit her yet that the show is finally over.
“It’s never a final goodbye,” Raver-Lampman said. “These people are in my life forever, and I’m so grateful for that. The show did that. It brought these incredible humans into my life.”
She said she hopes audiences are proud of their loyalty to the show and continue to revisit “this ridiculous family time and time again.”
“I think we have so many beautiful fans because our show represents what the world looks like, and the representation that our show has is unbelievable and so special and so unique,” Raver-Lampman said. “And it’s unfortunate that it’s unique and special, it should be the standard.”
David Castañeda, who portrays Diego Hargreeves, said he tried to run away when they wrapped the last scene, because he’s “really bad at goodbyes.”
“We want to stay a little bit longer, you know?” Castañeda said. “The last scene that we shot, knowing that this would be the last time we’d do this, it hadn’t really hit me. And I’m sure it will hit me as the weeks progress, but I kind of appreciate it.”
And while everyone else had emotional adieus, Robert Sheehan said the goodbye for him was “very procedural.” Sheehan, who plays Klaus Hargreeves, said he doesn’t feel like he’s bidding a final farewell to the series.
“We don’t trust the production when they tell us this is the last thing ever,” Sheehan said. “We kind of go, ‘No it’s not, there’s going to be several more phases of production that I’ll be involved with.’ So I’m gonna hold back on the sentimentality for now.”
The fourth and final season of “The Umbrella Academy” streams on Netflix Aug. 8.
